Military Breakfast

Military Breakfast - Shortly after returning from Vietnam, my wife and I divorced and I was transferred to Germany. I was assigned to the US Army Europe Headquarters in Heidelberg. This was in the days when officers had a separate table in the canteen and as I was newly single I used to meet my fellow NCOs at 6am each morning in the HQ Company Mess Hall for breakfast.

Along with scrambled eggs, it has helped me through some tough times. Again, remember that eating 1,500 calories a day is a calorie restriction that may not suit everyone's energy needs. This is especially true if you lead an active lifestyle, which translates into higher energy expenditure and thus a higher calorie requirement (4).

are in an Eiffel Tower box. Funny how I used to tell my wife what breakfast was in the military every day I was on active duty. I get hash browns, gravy on top and 2 easy eggs on top of everything else.

Coffee and snacks. Never had anything else for breakfast. With fall approaching and dreams of cool mornings, I've been thinking about one of my favorite things to eat when I was in the military: hamburger gravy on biscuits.

Or, "SOS" - "Sh*t On a Shingle" as we popularly called it. In World War II, when SOS was called "SOS," it was made by serving creamy chipped beef gravy on toast. Toast Single and Gravy "You Know What".

People still call chipped beef gravy "SOS," but when I was in the military, we usually served hamburger gravy on biscuits. That's our SOS. You could call it "SOB", but if you know what I mean, there's nothing you can do about it.

Military Comfort Food

The diet plan consists of a 3-day, calorie-restricted eating plan followed by 4 days off. Dieters are told to repeat the weekly cycle for up to 1 month or until they reach their goal. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add ground beef and maple sausage and cook until no longer pink. Gradually fold in the flour, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thick and sticky. You don't need all the flour. Gently whisk in the milk with a fork to avoid lumps.

Stir through the bowl. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture has reached the desired consistency. The longer it cooks, the thicker it gets. Water is the best thing to drink on a military diet, so drink as much as you can!

As long as you don't add extra calories with creamer and sugar, you can drink coffee on a military ration. Artificial sweeteners are bad for your blood sugar and can cause weight gain, so try to avoid them.

The Promise

Stevia (the one in your coffee) is the only artificial sweetener we recommend in the military diet. Drink as much caffeine-free herbal tea as you like with meals. The first 3 days of the diet have a fixed menu, the other 4 days are less.

For the remaining 4 days, you are still encouraged to eat a healthy diet or follow the recommended low-calorie diet. These are real food, cold weather (MCW) meals that we make for the United States Armed Forces.

Formerly known as Long Range Patrol Rations or LRPs (often confused with military MRE), these authentic military meals are rarely available in the civilian market. These MCWs are vacuum sealed in a small bag style mil-spec packaging and have a shelf life of three years.

In the dining room, we made gallons of creamy beef broth in a large stationary pot attached to the floor. The pot was so large that short cooks had to use a step stool to get inside to stir the gravy.
